Reading Time: 4 minutes

Aire Libre, the big journey of our Diletta and David, continues not without doubts, thoughts, and above all, kilometers to pedal. Follow along with us their logbook.

“Another great crossing of the Andes, and unfortunately for our legs, it won’t be the last. After Mendoza, we began the 4 days that will take us to Santiago, Chile. So far, we’ve completed two in Argentina, and we have two more in Chile left. Tomorrow, we’ll cross the border into the last country of this journey. We’ll return to Argentina in the end, but it’s strange to think that this is the last ‘new’ country we’re crossing. It’s as if everything has passed quickly since Bolivia, and indeed it has: our days have significantly lengthened, and by covering more kilometers, we’ve crossed this part more swiftly.

The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine who asked if we were going too fast and risking arriving at the end too soon for our flight. Actually, covering more kilometers in this part was intentional. We’ll descend the Carretera Austral (the famous cyclists’ highway) as winter arrives, and winter in Patagonia will bring entire days of wind where it will be impossible to leave four walls and snowstorms. Furthermore, when we finish the Carretera, we’ll have to start studying the connections between one part and another with ferries to get to Ushuaia, and we’ve been told that sometimes, due to snow, they don’t depart for an entire week. In short, many things to consider that made us realize we’ll ‘lose’ more days than expected in the south. But for now, we’re focused on the great mountains, the last country, and a few days in Santiago to prepare the bikes for the final 5,000 kilometers”.
